Our Story

The construct of "Upaya" translates to "skillful means." At Upaya Counseling, we intentionally assist others, with wisdom and compassion, to find relief from their suffering. We use evidence-based theories and techniques to customize a treatment approach that fits your specific concerns. The same method that "works" in one situation may not be effective in another. We conduct therapy with precision and flexibility and will teach you to apply similar principles in your life, in order to go from being stuck to unstuck.

Dr. Amanda Bittner founded Upaya in 2020 after working for more than 10 years in various Dialectical Behavior Therapy programs in St. Louis, at community mental health centers as well as private settings. Her knowledge from these experiences as well several years of training and supervising developing clinicians inspired her to open this practice where therapists can learn from and challenge each other to provide principle-driven, model-adherent, and culturally-repsonsive therapeutic interventions.

Our mission is to serve a diverse clientele of varying cultural identities and backgrounds who may be struggling with significant mental health concerns, relationship issues, or simply want to improve their quality of life. Through individual, couples, family, and/or group counseling, we deliver treatment for depression, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, post-traumatic stress, suicidality, addictions, emotional dysregulation, behavioral problems, and more. Upaya has a comprehensive DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) program serving both adolescents and adults. Contact us below, at [email protected], or 314-252-0675 for more information. We look forward to working with you!
